Soroptimist International of La Jolla (SILJ) was founded in 1947 and its members have made many contributions to our community over its fifty plus year history. We are part of Soroptimist International, which is a worldwide organization for women in management and the professions working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women.

Soroptimists work together in a spirit of friendship and fun to make the world a better place for all. Working at all levels--local, national and international--Soroptimists are improving the lives of women and girls.

SILJ is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization.

Our mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in our own communities and around the world. Soroptimists focus on a set of common goals:

  • To strive for human rights for all people and, in particular, to advance the status of women.
  • To develop interest in community, national and international affairs.
  • To develop a spirit of friendship and unity among Soroptimists of all countries.
  • To maintain high ethical standards in business and professional life.
  • To contribute to international understanding and universal friendship.
  • To develop the highest concept of patriotism.

Soroptimists clubs accomplish their service goals based on individual community need. Members make a difference through six programs of service:

  • Economic and social development
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Human rights/status of women
  • International goodwill and understanding

Soroptimists International enjoys NGO consultative status with the Economic and Social Council which oversees United Nations activities and policies promoting of human rights. This NGO status enables SI representatives to request the addition of an item on the Council’s agenda, submit written statements for circulation to all members of the council, make oral statements at Council meetings and contribute to other UN gatherings and seminars. It is in this forum that SI representatives can advocate for the Soroptimist mission, advancing the status of women and girls.
