La Jolla
(Pronounced "la hoya")
Spanish for "the jewel"

Located on the north coast of the city of San Diego, La Jolla is the jewel of the city in many ways. Featuring secluded coves and beaches, ocean caves, numerous small parks and the renowned Coast Walk, La Jolla is both a famous tourist attraction as well as home to over 8,000 residents of this sparkling city by the sea. A pedestrian-focused shopping district in "The Village" hosts many fine restaurants, cafes, boutiques, coffee houses and galleries.

Also calling La Jolla home are:

  • The Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Stephen Birch Aquarium & Museum

  • The University of California, San Diego -- with many research institutions and the Mandell Weiss Theater Institute, home of the La Jolla Playhouse

  • The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library

  • The famous Salk Institute and many biotechnology research & development facilities

  • The Torrey Pines State Reserve, one of the largest ocean-side reserves on the California coast which features takeoff sites for gliders and hang gliders

  • The beautiful Mt. Soledad summit, which offers some of the best views of San Diego

  • The La Jolla Underwater Park, an offshore ecological reserve, is a favorite of scuba divers departing from La Jolla Cove, and the Children's Pool just south offers a light surf due to a protective wall built out into the ocean.
